I'M GOING TO AUSTRALIA MATES !!

Let me start by letting y'all know that I am not a blogger. This is my first blog and it may be a little all over the place but those who know me know that's pretty much how I roll. As part of this maymester, it is our responsibility to post blogs of our reflections and experiences while abroad so stay tuned for more posts of my Australian Adventure !!!!

After months and months of planning, budgeting (this was really hard), excitement, nerves, and anticipation, the day is finally here - I'M GOING TO AUSTRALIA !!!!!! I've never really been abroad, (Mexico and the Bahamas are cool don't get me wrong, but those don't really count) I'm talking "real abroad" - 17 hour overseas plane rides kind of abroad. For the next 17 days, I will be indulged in Australian culture, learning and adapting to the Aussies' everyday way of life. Through this maymester, myself and about 30 others (including other students, two of my professors, and an orthopedic surgeon) will be exploring the culture and history of sports medicine while traveling to three different cities in Australia - Sydney, Cairns, and the Gold Coast. As most of you know, I'm the most indecisive human being you'll ever meet and I've already changed my major twice. I started with Public Health, switched to Athletic Training and now I'm an Exercise Science major. For the most part, I think I have at least one thing figured out and that's that I know I want to be in the healthcare field when I grow up. The human body and the way it works intrigues me and I aspire to help others overcome injuries and/or birth defects. While in Australia, we will be meeting with many healthcare professionals and learning about the cultural differences on current topics in sports medicine between Australia and the United States. I hope that this trip will help me feel further assured that this is the professional path that I want to take, while providing me with new knowledge about sports medicine.

It's definitely scary to go out of your comfort zone - I came from a town in Indiana to the University of South Carolina, over 600 miles away without knowing a single person. I'll be honest I had serious FOMO (fear of missing out -- you're welcome Grandma) seeing all my friends together on snapchat  that stayed in Indiana for college. However, I can say without even a thought of hesitation that choosing to go out of my comfort zone was the best decision that I have ever made. I'm absolutely in love with my school, the weather, the people and of course the Gamecocks. If this has taught me anything it's that if it scares you, then it might be a good thing to try. On this trip, I want to be "all in". From snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, to exploring the Blue Mountains in Sydney (google this, you have to), to attending a National Rugby League game, to learning how to surf from Aussies themselves - I will be taking every chance I get to get out of my comfort zone, be spontaneous and indulge in this once in a lifetime experience.

As promised, I'll keep y'all updated on my adventures. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers for safe travels !!! Catch ya on the flip side America -- Australia I'm coming for ya !!!!!
